Pocket Parks on Germantown Avenue

Philadelphia loves its parks, big and small.  William Penn designed center city to include small neighborhood squares in each of the quadrants surrounding City Hall.  And the Philadelphia City Planning Commission, in its most recent Comprehensive Plan, Philadelphia2035,set a bold vision that all residents will live within a 10-minute walk of a neighborhood park of recreation area.

The Mt. Airy Business Improvement District is proud to have contributed to this goal by building five pocket parks along the Germantown Avenue Commercial Corridor over the past two years, with a sixth park planned for later this year.

The pocket parks range from "Freedom Park" in the 6300 block of Germantown Avenue next to the historic Johnson House, and the 7100 block, where the sixth park will be named "Friendship Park."  And in between Freedom and Friendship are parks at Sedgwick Street, Carpenter Lane, Pelham Road, and our inaugural park next to the Septa bus depot -- Trolley Car Park.  Design of the parks was provided by Ruggiero Plant Land Design, Refugia constructed Carpenter Park; David Brothers Landscape Services constructed Freedom Park, Pelham Park, Sedgwick Park and Trolley Car Park.  Bird Studio designed the little libraries, and Philadelphia Salvage built the benches at Sedgwick Park. Park signage was designed by Brad Maule. David Brothers generously provided the maintenance of the parks pro bono as a service to the community.

The BID gratefully thanks the generous sponsors listed below who helped make the parks possible.  If you would like to be a Friend of the Pocket Parks, contact the BID at 215-8444-6492 or info@mtairybid.com.
